Prevent Dangerous Ice Dams with Helmet Heat
Contrary to popular belief, gutters are not the cause for icicles or ice build up!
Icicles and ice are caused due to snow that melts due to heat loss from poor roof insulation, or insufficient venting of attic space or soffits.
If your gutters were not properly cleaned out after the leaves came down in the fall, this leaves the gutters full of debris and will cause a backup of standing water which will in turn freeze and cause a back up of ice once winter sets in. If you don’t have gutter helmet, the prime time to clean out your gutters is mid November. Just after all the autumn leaves have fallen, but before the cold weather sets in and everything freezes for the winter. If the standing water has frozen in your gutters, unfortunately it’s too late to clean them out.
How Does Helmet Heat Work?
The Helmet Heat is a self regulated heat cable that is installed in your gutter system, down the downspout as well, and inside of the Gutter Helmet panel (usually clipped on the interior side of the helmet’s nose) It’s main purpose is to keep the gutters and panel just above a freezing temperature so that a dangerous ice dam does not form. The Helmet Heat is to be hard wired by an electrician and operated by a switch. The Helmet Heat system should be switched ON at the beginning of the season, and switched OFF once the season ends. If ice has already started to accumulate, the wire will not heat up enough to melt it away. Helmet Heat is designed to protect against ice in your Gutter system, not necessarily your roof.
